REYAN AKBAY

A recipient of Daughters of Ataturk’s Women of Distinction Award in 2001

Mrs. Akbay was born in Mudanya/Bursa, Turkey. She has a degree in education from Manisa Teachers’ College (Manisa Ogretmen Okulu). She is married to Oktay Akbay also an educator. The Akbays are employed by Moore County Schools.

Mrs. Akbay has raised her two daughters, Ozlem and Cigdem bicultural and bilingual. Mrs. Akbay has been able to maintain her Turkish heritage, beliefs and customs and is very proud of being Turkish American. She constantly encourages people to travel to her beautiful homeland Turkey. She always promotes Turkey with honor. She entertains Turkish officers who come to Hunstsville for military training, with home cooked Turkish meals, she wants her guests to feel welcome just as it is done in Turkey. She is a truly hospitable Turk.

Mrs. Akbay has been very active in the Turkish community and always continues to promote Turkish culture within the United States. She is constantly involved with the activities of her homeland and has always kept up-to-date with upcoming Turkish events. She is involved in many activies and is an active TACA (Turkish American Cultural Association of Alabama) member.

· Red Stone Arsenal Liaison Office-serve as a Liaison for the Turkish Officers who   come to Huntsville for Military training and for other business visitors.
· Local activities(Huntsville Art Museum,
· Huntsville Women's Club,festivals,presentations at schools,churches and seminars   related to Turkey
· Serving as a bridge between two countries and Turkish Associations,always   promoting good relations Turkey and U.S.A
· Work together with International Services Council of Huntsville/Madison County   Inc.
· Responding to articles in the media that relate to Turkey
· Raised fund for the earthquake victims
· Help promote Turkish Times and related Turkish activities
· Stays in touch with Alabama's Senators and Representative regarding Turkish   issues
· State of Alabama proclaiming October 29,2001 as"Turkish Republic and the Turkish -   American Solidarity Day"
· Encourage huntsville Public Library for ordering Turkish newspaper, magazines,   movies and music, videos, books.
· Arrange meetings with Turkish American's from other cities
· Instrumental for Olympic committee's selection of Atlanta as a site for the 1996   Olympics
· State of Alabama proclaiming 30 Agustos 2001 as"Day of Remembrance of the   Turkish Tragedy for Liberation to Sovereignty and Independence"
· Participates in International Students of the United States
· Army Ordinance Missile and Munitions Center (received an award in September   1996)
· Participated in Multi-Cultural Awareness Extraordinaire Program sponsored by Alfa   Kappa Alpha Sorority (received a certificate in October 1996)
· Received Meritorious Service Award from ATAA (June 1992)
· Received certificates from local activities.
